The
retail and commercial opportunities in Mount Pleasant are
extensive and varied. Retail establishments include a mixture
of national stores and specialty, customer-oriented shops,
located in the historic nine block downtown area, and throughout
the Mount Pleasant community.
Mount Pleasant's lovely, classic central square, in the midst
of the downtown, features an old threshing machine that remind
visitors and citizens of the city's agricultural heritage.
The historic downtown includes charming shops, brick sidewalks,
and Victorian street lamps refurbished in keeping with an
old-fashioned classic appeal. Many of the buildings are listed
on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and although
the shops are thoroughly modern, the quaint, almost Victorian,
turn of the century appeal shines through. In keeping with
that picturesque appeal, the 8000-square-foot DrugTown built
in 1999 in the central business district was constructed to
look as if it had been built a century before.
"Mount Pleasant offers a healthy mix of businesses both on
and off the square. There are nationally franchised and local,
independently owned retail businesses," said Kevin Wiley,
Vice-President of the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of CommerceRetail
Division and co-owner of Wiley-Nesbitt, kitchen and bath design
center.
The city is home to franchised stores including Wal-Mart,
True Value, Browns Shoe Fit, DrugTown, Hallmark as well as
locally owned shops offering everything from hardware to healthcare
supplies to specialty items of all kinds. Likewise, there
are both nationally-known and locally-owned restaurants for
all prices and tastes with traditional and authentic ethnic
menus.
