Worship Area churches cooperate and communicate for the good of the community. Galena's first church, a wood frame structure, was erected in 1832. Before that time, local congregations met in homes. Ministers attended to multiple congregations, traveling between parishes by horseback. However, once the first church was built in Galena, more soon followed. It wasn't long before the prosperity of the lead rush allowed local churches to build structures that rivaled the grandeur of Galena's most extravagant homes. Luckily, many of those old churches have been well taken care of, and Galena is now home to some of the oldest churches in the Northwest Territory. Of those churches, five project steeples above Galena's rooftops, while others have become popular sites for elegant weddings for Galena residents and couples from across the United States. Churches in Galena maintain open lines of communication with one another through the United Churches of Galena, a collaboration of local ministers. Church leaders attend regular meetings to inform each other about community needs and share details about upcoming events and functions. The United Churches of Galena lends local assistance through the sponsorship of a food pantry to nurture families in need. Additionally, the churches raise funds through concerts and special programs intended to facilitate the good work of the joint ministries. Most recently, the United Churches pooled resources to construct a home for a family in need. The Churches of Galena invite you to worship with them. Assembly of
