Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County have an important place in both
Illinois history and the history of our country. Jefferson County
has stood out from the rest, making it home to many innovative
and energetic people.
The
excellent location enticed settlers to make their homes and
businesses here. The region grew, moving quickly toward the
20th century with the advent of rail service. Improved roads
put even more life into the bustling economy. Jefferson County
has the luxury of being served by Interstates 57 and 64, major
routes which bring products and visitors from every direction.
Mt. Vernon sits at the crossroads of these two interstates.
The communities of the area have taken advantage of these highways
to become a regional focus for commerce and tourism. Almost
one-third of the nation’s top 50 metropolitan areas are
within 500 miles of Jefferson County.
Improved two-lane highways feeding into the interstate make
rural travel fast and efficient. Seven interstate and 25 intrastate
motor carriers operating from five terminals serve Mt. Vernon.
Three rail companies — CSX, Norfolk Southern and Union
Pacific — serve Mt. Vernon.
Mt. Vernon Airport offers a 6,500-ft. main runway, fixed-base
operation, modern terminal facilities and storage hangars, as
well as charter and private flights. The airport is a major
refueling stop due to its central location. St. Louis’
Lambert International Airport is about an hour and a half’s
drive from Mt. Vernon, and Mid-America Airport in Mascoutah,
Illinois is a short 45 minutes away.
Jefferson County is the perfect place to live for those wanting
to be near a major metropolitan area, yet still be able to leave
the hustle and bustle of urban life in the city.
