More Than Just a River

Rock River supplies residents with recreational activities and community events

Located in the heart of the Rockford community, Rock River supplies residents with recreational activities and community events all season long. There are excellent campsites along the riverbank as well as luxurious riverfront accommodations. No one will want to miss the walking paths, fishing, rafting, canoeing, or cruising available at Rock River — there’s simply too much fun to be had!

Experience a Rock River “getaway” at one of its riverfront accommodations. The River House Bed & Breakfast, a five-acre wooded retreat on the river, is adorned with Southwestern décor, complete with fireplaces and private screened porches. Guests enjoy gourmet breakfasts and dinners while gazing at the beautiful river and its surrounding scenery. Only steps away from the river, the River House provides its guests with canoe access, riverside bonfires and more. Cliffbreakers Comfort Suites and Conference Center also lies along the Rock River. This extraordinary getaway features rare antiques and architectural artifacts from around the globe. Guests can dine in style at Cliffbreakers’ own river view restaurant.

If camping is more your style, explore the 228-acre Hononegah Campground located directly on Rock River. Sponsored by the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, this vast campground offers visitors bike paths, hiking trails, fishing, a boat launching area and a children’s playground.

Enjoy one of the greatest walking paths in Rockford - the Rock River Recreational Path. Beginning at Davis Park in downtown Rockford, the path crisscrosses the river as it winds its way northward through garden areas and several public parks. Visitors can jog, skate, bike or walk along the paved and lighted pathway. Established as a bicentennial community project in 1976, this ten-mile recreational path provides an opportunity to explore the great outdoors and the beauty of Rock River.

Cruise the river in style aboard the Forest City Queen at Riverview Park. The Forest City Queen offers a variety of seasonal riverboat excursions on Rock River, including sightseeing, lunch or dinner, and water-ski show cruises.

The Rock River also inspires community events such as the On the Waterfront Festival held during Labor Day weekend. Incorporating ten different stages, the waterfront festival features various regional and national performers, as well as games, carnival rides, and (of course) food!

With so many recreational and community activities to experience, it’s no wonder that you can’t really enjoy Rockford without enjoying the Rock River. As the heart of the Rockford region, the Rock River promises fun for the entire family - don’t miss out!
