Calloway County Government
Judge Executive Larry Elkins Is Devoted to Community Betterment and Growth

It is easy for Calloway County Judge Executive Larry Elkins to talk about Murray and Calloway County because he has lived here all of his life. "I love this community, and I can't imagine living anywhere else," says Elkins. Elkins is in his second term as the Judge Executive; he was re-elected in 2002 for another four-year term, and he is looking forward to what is to come for Murray and Calloway County.

"I think the thing that is so great about Murray is that we have been able to maintain the feeling of a rural community, but we have been able to grow and enjoy the amenities of a larger town," Elkins notes.

Calloway County was formed in 1822 and contains about 395 square miles. The county was named in honor of Colonel Richard Callaway, who had a long association with Kentucky. Murray became the county seat in the early 1800s.

Elkins points out several things that have improved over the many years he has lived here. "Our transportation system is much better, we have more choices in services, and our economy has shown stable growth."

When asked about his career and what he is most proud of, Elkins states that he is proud to have developed his career one step at a time. "I started in the Murray Police Department as a dispatcher and from there continued to advance," he says. "I think my experience in government, both city and county government, helps me to understand the tasks at hand that face me as Judge Executive."

"If there is one thing I would hope for Murray and Calloway County, it would be the continuation of steady growth," says Elkins.

Elkins joins four county magistrates on the Fiscal Court. All of the officials are elected to four-year terms. Judge Elkins represents the county on numerous boards and is appreciative of all of the many volunteers in Calloway County.

"One thing I love about this job is that no day is the same as the next," states Elkins. "While I have several challenges with budgeting and allocating funds to the many worthwhile organizations and projects in this county, the job is really exciting, and I have been able to meet lots of wonderful people."

Judge Elkins' office is located on the court square in the courthouse.
