College
Founded in 1863, Boston College is a coeducational university offering
graduate and undergraduate degrees. More than 13,000 students enjoy
the 40-acre campus in Newton and the 116-acre main campus, just six
miles from downtown Boston. US News & World Report recently ranked
the school 38th among national universities.
With a 21 percent increase in undergraduate applications in recent years
and plans for a new student center and humanities building, Boston College
has entered the 21st century in a healthy way. Faculty positions continue
to be added, and 10 campus buildings have been built or renovated during
the last decade.
Degrees are granted in Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities, Social
Sciences, Natural Sciences, Education, Business Administration, Finance,
Social Work, Nursing and Law. Woods College of Advancing Studies provides
full- and part-time study options for those who are in the work force
and/or raising a family.
The athletic program consists of 17 mens and 17 womens varsity
sports competing at the NCAA Division I level. The football Eagles have
one of the highest graduation rates of any Division 1-A program in the
country. There are also 34 intramural, recreation and club sports, with
more than 4,000 undergraduates participating annually.
Public events include lectures, art exhibits, concerts, panel discussions,
football and hockey games, rowing competitions, and many other options.
Many well-known American speakers, musicians and museums are honored
to accept invitations from the Boston College.
Lasell
College
Founded in 1851 and one of the oldest colleges in Greater Boston, Lasell
College offers professionally oriented bachelors and masters
degree programs in Education, Humanities, Justice Studies, Social Sciences,
Exercise Physiology, Sport Management, Business Administration, Computer
Science, Fashion Design and Production, Fashion and Retail Merchandising,
Graphic Design, Hotel/Travel/Tourism Administration, and Management
Information Systems. The 50-acre campus of this coeducational school
is in Newton.
With a strong emphasis on connecting the classroom experience with real
life, Lasell College encourages students to participate in internships,
service learning and other projects. Connected-learning facilities on
campus include two child study centers, a bed and breakfast inn, labs
for physical therapy, and a fashion design/production center with display
areas for visual merchandising.
Students balance academics with athletics. Choices include mens
basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer and volleyball and womens
basketball, cross-country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball
and volleyball. Intramural sports include flag football, basketball
and wiffle ball. The Athletic Center offers aerobics classes and a variety
of other physical fitness activities. Free canoe and kayak rentals,
free access to cross-country skiing, and the Rowing Club provide unique
opportunities to be outdoors.
Mount
Ida College
Dedicated to a combination of classroom and community, Mount Ida College
realizes the importance of practical experience through internships
and fieldwork for its students. More than 1,200 men and women pursue
bachelors degrees in more than 25 areas of study, including animal
science, arts and science, business, design, and funeral service. All
degrees build on a foundation of critical thinking, communication and
creative problem-solving skills.
Mount Ida College has been a strong presence in the Newton area since
1899. In the 1980s, Chamberlayne Junior College, the New England Institute
of Funeral Service Education and the School of Technical Electricity
merged with Mount Ida to form the College as it is today. Eighty percent
of the campus buildings were constructed over the past 15 years, including
the new academic technology building and an athletic center.
Mustang athletic programs include womens soccer, volleyball, cross-country,
basketball, equestrian and softball. For men there is soccer, basketball,
volleyball, lacrosse and football. The mens soccer team recently
won the conference championship in NCAA Division III competition, and
the womens volleyball team recently won their second North Atlantic
Conference Championship. A variety of intramural sports are also popular
with students.
Franklin
W. Olin College of Engineering
Located on a 70-acre campus in Needham, Olin College blends the traditional
with the futuristic in its campus design. Nearby Babson College partners
with Olin College to help provide a full range of academic, social and
athletic options.
Recently recognized as one of the 328 Most Interesting Colleges
in the U.S. by Kaplan Publishing, Olin College launched its innovative
curriculum in 2002. Noted as the first independent engineering college
of the 21st century, Olin is committed to changing the way students
learn about engineering.
Learning by doing is an integral part of students education. The
curriculum features an interdisciplinary approach, including teamwork,
hands-on design, business, creativity and communication. Attractive
campus facilities accommodate this approach well and will adapt to the
changes of the future. Majors are offered in Electrical and Computer
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Engineering with a concentration,
such as Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or others.
The Passionate Pursuit program encourages students to develop and enjoy
intellectual interests outside engineering, whether in the arts, humanities,
philanthropy or technology. Students are also encouraged to participate
in research projects and co-curricular activities such as learning sign
language, yoga, dance and fishing. Community service options include
the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, Needham High School and Habitat for
Humanity. Intramural sports activities complete the picture of a well-rounded
education.
Regis
College
An intergenerational learning community, Regis College is a liberal
arts and sciences womens college. Offering full- and part-time
study for undergraduate and graduate study, this school serves more
than 1,300 students and helps them to be a positive influence on todays
society.
Founded in 1927 by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Regis
College was the first resident Catholic college for women in the Boston
area. Today, its 168-acre campus in Weston provides a traditional educational
setting for students to pursue their studies.
Degrees and certifications are offered in nursing, social work, education,
business management and the arts. Courses cover all disciplines and
provide concentrated study in a small-class setting. Athletic programs
include cross-country, field hockey, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball,
swimming and diving, track and field, and softball. Teams shine in competition
with other schools, with the tennis team fairing well in the Commonwealth
Coast Conference in the 2003 season.
