When you or a loved one is ill or injured, you want a quality health care facility nearby. Newton and Needham have some of the best services in the state available to help their residents.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH)
This 236-bed community teaching hospital provides medical, surgical and specialty care for adults and children. As a member of the Partners HealthCare network, NWH is affiliated with other well-known hospitals and medical centers in the Boston area.

Diagnosis is made easier with the latest in digital medical technology and equipment. Sixteen surgical suites include areas for pre-operative and post-operative care. The emergency department and pediatric emergency department stand ready to serve around the clock. There are several specialty centers at NWH.

The Spine Center, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, focuses on the diagnosis and care of neck and back problems. The expertise of leading physicians, physical therapists and other specialists is readily available.

In its cheerful new center, MassGeneral for Children provides outpatient services and comprehensive pediatric care. Pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, ear-nose-throat specialists and a host of other specialists are on call for infants and children.

Level II Special Care Nursery for newborns combines the latest in neonatology with individualized attention.

Women’s Imaging Suite makes available mammography, ultrasound, amniocentesis, bone densitometry and other services especially for women.
The Wellness Center offers classes for every age group. Yoga, strength training, nutrition, smoking cessation, childbirth education,
parenting, infant nutrition and health-
oriented support groups are just some of the options. There are also special programs and lectures on cardiovascular health, diabetes and other diseases.

Partners Reproductive Medicine Center addresses fertility and its accompanying challenges.

Multiple Sclerosis Clinic cares for the needs of individuals and families dealing with the disease.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Needham Campus

As a not-for-profit community health care corporation, this 41-bed, acute-care community hospital brings many services to the communities of Newton and Needham. Deaconess offers a full-service emergency department as well as inpatient and outpatient surgical services. Specialty services include cardiac rehabilitation, an intensive care unit, oncology, rehabilitation medicine, respiratory care and a sleep disorders center. Diagnostic imaging services and 24-hour blood bank services round out the picture.

Relating to the community is a major part of Deaconess’ health care mission. Occupational health services, nutritional counseling, and health and wellness classes are all part of that mission. Community-service programs include preventive health screenings, educational lectures, CPR and first aid training, smoking cessation, stress management, and relaxation. Exercise programs, diabetes education and strength training are important elements as well.

Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center
With humble beginnings in 1868 as St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, this 400-bed facility in Boston is one of the region’s largest health care providers. Here, the needs of the whole person are valued, and compassion is an essential part of each patient’s recovery.

St. Elizabeth’s centers of excellence include the Bone and Joint Center, Cancer Care, Cardiovascular Care and Research, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Pulmonary and Critical Care, and Women’s Health. Emergency Care, Cardiovascular Rehabilitation, the Center for Weight Control, the Lymphedema Program, Occupational Health, rehabilitation Services, the Pain Management Center and the Travel Medicine Center are other specialty centers. Inpatient and outpatient care are provided in the areas of endocrinology, gerontology, neonatology, pediatrics, surgery and many others.

St. Elizabeth’s is also a center for teaching and research. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, St. Elizabeth’s conducts research in the areas of cardiology, neurology, hematology/oncology, gastroenterology, Alzheimer’s, malaria mechanisms and treatment, and nephrology — just to name a few. Linking basic science with clinical trials helps create new therapies for many diseases, conditions and illnesses. The latest discoveries and information are used to direct patient care.

As a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine, St. Elizabeth’s helps train medical students for their future careers. The Spiritual Care department not only ministers to patients and families, but also provides a clinical pastoral education program in cooperation with Andover Newton Theological School.

Other Services
Quality dental, vision and other health care services not requiring hospitalization are available in both Newton and Needham. Many doctors from Boston have office hours and see patients on a regular basis in the clinics and hospitals of these communities.
