Worship Many
faith traditions are represented in the churches of Newton and Needham.
From historical buildings to new construction, they are a strong presence
in the life of the community. More than 80 churches offer a variety
of worship styles, educational opportunities and ways to serve others.
Christian, Jewish and Islamic congregations, offering worship services
in English, Korean, Chinese and Greek, are part of the rich diversity
found here.
Here are just a few of the many ways in which area churches interact
with their communities. Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center in
Newton hosts many arts programs and childrens activities. Homegrown
Coffeehouse at First Parish In Needham Unitarian Universalist presents
live folk music and serves desserts twice monthly. The annual Mayors
Prayer Breakfast in May brings many together with the common goal of
praying for local government.
Founded in 1966 and based in Newton, Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries
is an interfaith group of Jewish, Christian and Muslim congregations
from 18 communities in the Greater Boston area. This is a 21st-century
partnership for a more effective and just society.
Andover Newton Theological School, founded in 1807, is the oldest graduate
school of theology in the United States. With its ecumenical focus,
the school prepares church leaders and serves as
a church resource. As one of 10 seminaries in the Boston Theological
Institute, the school currently has 400 students representing 35 denominations.
Students participate in fieldwork at area churches as part of the Partners
in Theological Education program.
The Clinical Pastoral Education program, in cooperation with Caritas
St. Elizabeths Hospital and other area hospitals, is for
theological students, graduate students and clergy.
