From its early days as a farming community, to the vibrant economy and active neighborhoods of today, Livonia has maintained the essence of a small town. Although the community purposely has no structured downtown, you will find excellent shops and collections of stores throughout Livonia, helping define unique neighborhoods within a block or two of a major thoroughfare.

“There is a sense of community here, and there are wonderful neighborhoods,” said Betty Bjarnesen, a longtime Livonian who, like every citizen, exhibits enthusiasm for her hometown. “There are areas in which the home styles are very consistent and others where each home is different. You can also find winding streets and small streams in certain locations. Evidence of how much residents love Livonia is in the fact that nearly 90 percent of Livonia’s more than 38,000 housing units are occupied by the owner. Once you move to Livonia, you won’t want to ever leave!”

Livonia has homes to satisfy every housing taste, from stately older homes which retain Livonia’s past; to ranch-style homes in family-oriented neighborhoods; to the executive-style homes in the community’s newly developed areas.

Because of the high demand for housing in Livonia, developers actively seek out space to build new housing. Many of these new homes are of the executive-level variety, though a good number of condominiums have also been constructed lately. These appeal to older citizens of the community who want to maintain their residence without the required maintenance of a single-family home.

Most neighborhoods are centered around one or more of Livonia’s excellent schools and family activities, such as hockey, soccer, swimming, music and more.

“It’s so important that there are memories and pride in the neighborhoods. It’s not uncommon for someone to ask that I let them know when a house is available in their old neighborhood, because they experienced a wonderful childhood there,” Bjarnesen said.
