To ensure a well-trained workforce that meets the needs of local
employers, continuing education and customized training is available
through Hillyard Technical Center, Vatterott College and Missouri
Western State College.
A child can enroll in kindergarten and complete education through
college and never leave St. Joseph.
Elementary
Education
The St.
Joseph Public School has a mission of quality education
for more than 12,000 students enrolled in three high schools,
four middle schools and eighteen elementary schools. The St.
Joseph School District (AAA District Accreditation) offers a
staff with 50 percent of the teachers holding masters degrees.
The system is proud of its teacher-pupil ratio of 1 to 24 and
equally proud that over the last 10 years, three St. Joseph
School District teachers have been selected as Missouri Teacher
of the Year.
Residents may choose from a number of quality parochial/private
grade schools and high schools. The city's four-year Catholic
high school, Bishop LeBlond, offers a teacher-pupil ratio of
1 to 14. The St. Joseph Catholic Education Committee and Children
First School can provide you with information about other opportunities
in St. Joseph.
Secondary
Education
Nearly 90% of the area's adult population has a high school
education or better, compared to approximately 75% nationally.
As a result of a community-wide partnership, St. Joseph's high
school drop out rate is the lowest in the state at approximately
4%. Furthermore, close to 22% of St. Joseph workers have earned
a bachelors' degree, compared to about 20% nationally.
Missouri Western
State College occupies a 744-acre campus on the east
side of St. Joseph. Missouri Western has offered excellent higher
education for nearly three decades, with a current enrollment
of 5,000 students and over 175 faculty. The institution blends
traditional liberal arts and sciences and career-oriented degree
programs, with 68 degree areas. The college is fully accredited
by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools
and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Northwest Missouri State University, located approximately
45 miles north of St. Joseph in Maryville, offers undergraduate
and graduate programs. With an enrollment of 6,000, Northwest
has distinguished itself among American universities in at least
three areas: electronic campus; Culture of Quality; and outstanding
athletic programs.
Benedictine College is a four-year, Catholic residential
college 20 miles southwest of St. Joseph in Atchison Kansas.
The college has a 15:1 student to teacher ratio and offer numerous
undergraduate majors, an executive master's in business administration
and a master's in educational administration.
Technical
Education
Business skills and vocational techniques are offered and a
complete program of continuing education is provided through
courses at Missouri Western State College, Hillyard Technical
Center and Vatterott College.
Hillyard Technical Center is a public school that meets
both industrial and individual needs in areas such as architecture,
computers, business technology, and personal development. Enrollment:
600 daytime, 1,500 evening
Vatterott College is a private technical college that
offers degree and certification programs in cosmetology/manicuring,
HVAC, computer office assistant, medical office assistant, accounting,
computer electronics, computer drafting and computer programming/system
analysis. Courses begin frequently throughout the year and offer
both day and evening hours, full or part time. The college is
accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and
Colleges of Technology. Enrollment: 520
Missouri
Customized Training Program
The Missouri
Customized Training Program (MCTP) helps Missouri employers
with funding to offset the costs of employee training and retraining.
It assists new and expanding businesses in recruiting, screening,
and training workers, and it helps existing employers retain
their current workforce when faced with needed upgrading and
