Columbus
cares about its neighborhoods and it shows.
Columbus
is a place of lovely homes and well-kept lawns, which is another indication
that this is a town that cares. Available homes are plentiful, though
it is most difficult to publicize an average cost because average
to one person may not mean the same to another. And also, average
cost varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. If the neighborhood is
known to be upmarket, with large landscaped lots or acreage and many
trees, the homes will cost more than a comparable home elsewhere.
Whatever category you choose, from executive home, to antebellum home,
to a starter home or one with less upkeep for retirees
you will find that the prices are among the lowest in the nation. For
example, a three bedroom, two bath, ranch-style home with standard amenities
in an established neighborhood could cost around $75,000 to $85,000
in Columbus, while a comparable home in a bigger city could cost twice
that amount. Some people come here and buy up, since after
selling a home elsewhere, they have enough equity to purchase a larger,
finer home.
There are distinct real estate divisions throughout the city and county.
The Southside is more historic; its where more antebellum homes
are located. The Cady Hills and Bent Tree areas are more expensive because
the executive-type homes in these outlying areas are larger, with more
amenities and with large lots. New Hope is a popular residential area
in the county, and so is Caledonia, a small town gaining appeal.
Camphouses of diverse styles are located along the area rivers, and
these wonderful weekend getaways are usually filled with family and
friends who love the great outdoors. Some camphouses are plush and primped-up,
while others are rustic and welcoming to city dwellers who want to relax.
Theres a definite river culture here in this old river
city, and its one tradition that is most cherished.
Before buying, contact a local realtor and tell them your needs and
price range. They know the market and can surely show you several homes
from which to choose. There are also real estate publications which
show photos and descriptions of available homes, and the local newspaper,
the Commercial Dispatch, lists properties.
