An
active tourism program in Columbus embraces all aspects of the travel
industry, from heritage/cultural tourism to arts offerings to sports
events. The group responsible for packaging tourism, or telling the
world about the diversity available thus bringing tourists to
town is the Columbus Lowndes-Convention & Visitors Bureau
(CLCVB).
Director of Tourism Michael McCalla says that a most impressive aspect
of Columbus is the diversity of natural resources. He added,
One would have to search far to find an area that could rival
our many attributes that are so often taken for granted. Where else
can a traveler find such a mixture of history, outdoor recreation, arts,
education, military influence and fine restaurants all located in such
a quaint Friendly City atmosphere? This diversity is one
of the things that has impressed me so much during my tenure here and
is one of the keys to the success of our business plan, said McCalla.
The major function of the CLCVB is to market the city as a destination
for anyone interested in history, architecture, antiques, the arts,
sports and recreation, or the thing that big city folk from north of
the Mason-Dixon line head south for: the Southern Experience,
namely the mythical and magnolia-laden gardens and gowns they see in
films about the pre-Civil War South. Visitors who come for a serving
of Southern culture will appreciate the historic homes open daily, Friendship
Cemetery, walking and driving tours of the historic Southside, and old-fashioned
buggy rides along the tree-lined streets.
The community is encouraged to participate in tourism efforts through
a Local Grant program which allows the CLCVB to offer grants to qualifying
recipients. The grantees, in turn, promote events that will further
enhance tourism in Columbus and Lowndes County.
