Welcome
to the City of Columbus and the County of Lowndes.
Every memorable
city has at least one focal point that establishes its identity. Columbus
has several from the historic churches and homes, to Friendship
Cemetery, to the esteemed Mississippi University for Women. Add the
latest in the chronological order of special places, the Tennessee Williams
Home/Welcome Center, and see that indeed, this town is a treasure.
The yellow and gray Victorian structure at 300 Main Street is the place
to get information on Columbus attractions, as well as stellar attractions
throughout the State of Mississippi. In the process, the Welcome Center
staff extends a world-class welcome to all who enter the doors. In fact,
visitors say that a stop at the Welcome Center is a testament to the
forever-fashionable Southern hospitality. After your visit, youll
know why Columbus has been referred to as the town
Where
flowers healed the nation.
A historic marker on the front lawn explains that the Welcome Center
a former Episcopal Church rectory was the first home of
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams. His grandfather,
the Reverend Walter Dakin, was the rector of St. Pauls Episcopal
Church in 1911 when Tennessee was born, and when the young Williams
family lived with Mrs. Williams parents, the Dakins. The house
sat beside St. Pauls until 1995, when the Chamber of Commerce
had it moved to its present location.
