Worship

Durham thrives on the cultural diversity present in its neighborhoods and businesses. This diversity is also evident in the religious community, and religion, regardless of the denomination, is an important part of most people’s lives in Durham.

No matter what your religious preference, you’ll find a place to worship in Durham. Most churches in the area hold both weekend and weekday meetings to accommodate the different schedules of members. There are traditional and contemporary worship services held in churches as well as other, nontraditional settings.

Durham is home to a strong Baptist community. There are over 75 active Baptist congregations in Durham. From youth retreats to adult lecture series, there is something to strengthen everyone who is ready to get involved. Each church is unique in its approach to teaching the Bible, but each works to uplift and help those around them. They are also ready to welcome all people, regardless of their religious affiliation.

Many other Christian denominations are ready to welcome you in Durham. The Catholic community has several churches, each of which celebrates daily Mass. The Holy Cross Catholic Church was founded in 1939 to serve the
African-American Catholics in the area. Although it has blossomed into a parish serving many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, it continues to maintain its special character as an African-American Parish.

A strong Jewish community also exists in Durham and can trace its roots back to the late 1870s, when German and Eastern-European immigrants arrived in Durham. Today the Jewish community meets at a synagogue on Watts
and Markham streets and enjoys the renovated Freedman Center, which provides classrooms and an attractive environment for major social and educational functions.

Youth in Durham are also very involved in religious activities. From youth retreats and specialized Bible-study groups to after-school programs, there is always something to do in Durham. Youth are always welcome at the various activities throughout the community, no matter their affiliation. Youth are encouraged to seek their own answers to religious questions through study, prayer and a strong adult support system. Area religious leaders know that by teaching the youth today, there will be strong
leaders tomorrow.

King’s Park International Church
More than a local congregation, King’s Park International Church (KPIC) is a Christ-centered, multicultural, Bible-based church with a heart to model Christian community to our surrounding cities and the world by making disciples, training leaders and planting churches.

While KPIC’s impact is global, the church is rooted in the communities of the Triangle region. Reaching out to all ages and cultures, KPIC is a family of believers that includes students and professionals, singles and families,
20-somethings and empty-nesters. Unique ministry programs specially developed for all ages ensure that KPIC members receive the spiritual support they need
to grow in Christ and fulfill their God-given destinies.

Rooted in the sound doctrines of historic Christianity, KPIC believes that God has set forth the essentials of faith and practice in His Word, the Bible. It is this unswerving commitment to the Word of God that informs, inspires and enables KPIC to experience the incredible benefits of Christ’s work of redemption. Among the most striking examples of such redemption is the diversity represented in the church. Four distinct ethnicities are represented within the pastoral staff — a poignant microcosm of the congregation as a whole, which is comprised of 23 nationalities and 48 ethnicities.

KPIC is about knowing and enjoying God and living life with the fullness He intends. It’s about understanding God’s plan and daring to make a difference in the world around you. KPIC is a place where God is honored and worshiped in reconciled diversity. The KPIC family warmly invites you to experience this unique community on a Sunday morning. Your life will never be the same.
