The
The first inhabitants of Allegheny County can be traced back
to the 17th century and a tribe of Native Americans known
as the Monongahela. During the middle of the 17th century,
these people disappeared from Pennsylvania, and the areas
that they settled in reverted back to wilderness.
In the early 18th century, Native Americans from the East
and the South settled in the area. These people named the
area the Allegewi, after the mountains. Later in the 1700s,
the English ousted French colonists, who had been living peacefully
with the Native Americans, and more colonists began settling
into the area. Within two years, political boundaries had
been determined, starting with Pine and Deer townships in
1796.
In 1890, oil was discovered in McCandless and West View, bringing
in even more settlers. Soon, larger towns appeared and transportation
was improved. The North Hills was beginning to change from
an agricultural community to a retail and industrial area.
Since then, the number of farms in the North Hills has decreased
dramatically, and people have turned to other occupations.
The area continues to prosper as new construction is added
to the existing tree-lined surroundings offered by the warm,
diverse
North Hills communities.A Memorial displays one of the many
weapons used by soldiers to defend the people of Pennsylvania.
