Message from the Chairman

Perhaps the most thrilling part of serving as the 2005 Chair of the North Dallas Chamber of Com-merce is the honor to be part of the leadership that plots the course for the chamber beyond its 50th Anniversary. Following the footsteps of prominent leaders Ebby Halliday, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Max Wells and immediate past chairman, Ben Biller, is a great challenge, but is one that is made easier by a membership that is eager to work hard to improve the community and grow their business. I take pride that this chamber is considered one of the doors you walk through when you seek opportunities to grow your business and your career. It is also the chamber that actively seeks to make Dallas a better place to work, live and play.

Before I was named a partner with the law firm of Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP, I called several places home. I am a native of Alexandria, Indiana, and went to undergraduate school in Madison, Wisconsin, before I moved to Houston, Texas. After four years in public relations in the chemical and oil industries in Houston, I studied law at the University of Texas in Austin before moving to Dallas in 1988 to begin my legal career.

As the daughter, granddaughter and sister of small-business owners, I have long understood and appreciated the important role that small businesses play in our community and the impact they have on our community’s economy. My parents’ interest and participation in local politics and community affairs also contributed to my firm belief that the business community must be more than economic contributors. Business leaders must become active participants in their communities — by taking positions or providing comment on important civic issues, by serving on boards and commissions, or by getting involved in local schools.

Some of the issues the chamber is currently monitoring are local government corporations, the strong mayor form of government, public school finance, the future of the region’s water supply and regional transportation. You will likely read about (or, better yet, participate in forming) the chamber’s public position on each over the course of the next year.

As you think of what you want to accomplish this year personally and professionally, please consider joining your chamber colleagues as we strive to provide a trusted voice for business in Dallas.

Sincerely,

Margaret “Peg” Donahue Hall
