Ochiltree County is a hub of recreation and tourist attractions. Boating, fishing, swimming, golf, festivals and the annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta are sure to get everyone involved in the fun of the local community spirit.

Wolf Creek Park and Lake Fryer are located just off Highway 83 near Perryton and offer a variety of activities for the whole family. You can camp in the same places as the early frontiersmen and enjoy the quiet beauty of nature just as they did. The lake also offers plenty of water sports, while the land-lover can choose from a selection of hiking trails.

Wolf Creek Park is a favorite place to go camping for local residents, and it’s easy to see why. With 94 R.V. hook-ups providing full electricity and water, you can enjoy the picturesque surroundings while enjoying many of the comforts of home. There are also picnic tables and barbeque grills throughout the shaded campground. For the more primitive camper, there are several wilderness areas scattered around the lake ready for you to pitch a tent. The roads in these areas are designated “non-through traffic,” giving you a peaceful camping experience. Both the north and south shores have bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms, just one more reason to make Wolf Creek Park the perfect destination for your next camping trip.

Once at the park, you can enjoy fishing for a variety of fish in the stocked lake and get all the fishing gear you need at a well-equipped bait house. If you aren’t into fishing, enjoy swimming, wind surfing, boating and skiing on the lake.

In addition to the water activities, there are plenty of things to do on land. The park has many interesting trails to explore where hikers often glimpse deer, antelope, turkeys and many other species of native wildlife. The Lobo Trading Post sells picnic, camping and fishing supplies and permits as well as giving visitors a wonderful dining experience. There is also an incredible Fourth of July celebration each year with a spectacular fireworks display. Wolf Creek Park and Lake Fryer make up one of the finest recreational areas in the entire Texas panhandle.

Each August, the Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration takes place in Perryton. The event celebrates the founding of the city — when residents moved their homes from Ochiltree to be near the railroad — and marks the day the first train steamed through Ochiltree County in 1919. Festivities begin with a breakfast followed by a parade commemorating the founding of Perryton. The Museum of the Plains holds Pioneer Day in conjunction with the Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration and offers free admission to the museum, where patrons can browse through booths set up by local artisans.

The Perryton Municipal Golf Course is home to the annual Oil Patch Golf Tournament. Sponsored by the Ochiltree-Perryton Chamber of Commerce, the tournament draws players from all over the region to put their skills to the test on the 18-hole course.

Each May, the town comes alive to celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo. The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta commemorates the region’s strong Mexican heritage through traditional food, dance and fun. Be sure to stop by and join in the celebration
