The
City's
public schools provide a strong academic base and
extensive extracurricular and recreational activities for
more than 7,000 students and community members. And Wauwatosa
has the lowest tax rate for school purposes among the Milwaukee
County suburbs. Our neighborhood school system includes nine
elementary, two middle, and two high schools. The district
also operates four school pro-grams on the Milwaukee County
Grounds-at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, the Child and
Adolescent Treatment Center, the Milwaukee County Juvenile
Detention Center, and Plank Road School.
Among the outstanding features of Wauwatosa's elementary schools
are two-year kindergarten programs for both four- and five-year-old
children, extensive instruction in communicative arts, and
math and science programs that emphasize hands-on learning.
We have programs for the gifted and talented children, as
well as for those with special needs. Wauwatosa's middle schools
serve children in grades six through eight. The middle schools
offer a strong basic academic core with a range of other courses
that allow students to explore their areas of interest. Our
high schools, Wauwatosa East and West, provide comprehensive
academic programs. In addition to a strong college preparatory
sequence, a variety of school-to-work programs give students
exposure to career opportunities.
The school district's commitment to technology results in
a fully networked system with computer stations in classrooms,
a mini lab in each elementary library, and multiple Internet
connections. Technology is a tool that is fully integrated
into the curriculum. An award-winning teaching staff provides
instruction to students who routinely surpass both state and
national averages on tests measuring academic achievement-college
entrance exams, standardized tests and state assessments.
Wauwatosa's schools enjoy widespread community support, including
active parent organizations at each school, an education foundation
that provides grants for innovative teaching projects, and
various community groups offering scholarships for teachers
and students. Hundreds of parents and other community members
volunteer in our schools on a regular basis.
A nationwide service that assists relocating families annually
rates Wauwatosa among the top 10 percent of all school districts
in the country for meeting the needs of families. A national
magazine featured us in its "America's Top Places to Live
Today" edition, and we were cited as one of 100 United States
communities for our "superb public school systems" and affordable
housing. In addition to the public schools, we have 10 private
and parochial schools within the city limits, with a combined
enrollment of approximately 2,300 students. Five of the schools
are affiliated with Catholic parishes, three with Lutheran
congregations.
Recreational programs are an integral element of Wauwatosa's
schools. The city's Recreation Department is part of the school
district, providing recreational, sports, and lifelong learning
activities for residents of all ages. The Recreation Department
sponsors a Community Band and offers year-round instruction
and activities in several areas-sports summer camps, organized
sports, exercise and fitness classes, computer technology,
CPR/first aid, and various hobbies and crafts. The Children's
Theatre of Wauwatosa schedules a series of live performances
at the high schools and trains children in its trouping program.
The troupes bring children's fairy tales to audiences throughout
southeastern Wisconsin.
If you're looking for a college close to home, three higher
education facilities reside in or near Wauwatosa's boundaries.
Two private colleges are located within our city. Mount
Mary College, sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre
Dame, is the first women's college in Wisconsin. Wisconsin
Lutheran College offers an independent, Christian
liberal arts curriculum. Milwaukee
Area Technical College, a community-based, two-year
school, has four campuses in the area.
Marquette University,
a four year liberal arts school, is located in nearby Milwaukee.
