City
Government in Wauwatosa is commited to providing top
quality services effectively and efficiently. With a municipal
workforce of nearly 500, it is large enough to meet the needs
of a sophisticated community, yet small enough to offer friendly
"small town" attention.
A mayor and common council guide Wauwatosa's government, with
a city administrator hired to assist with the day-to-day activities.
Due to its strong tax base, property taxes for municipal services
are in the midrange for cities in Wisconsin. Wauwatosa also
enjoys a AAA bond rating. The City has a strong tradition
of citizen involvement, with 30 boards and committees providing
an ongoing link between the community and its elected and
appointed officials. Together, we are making Wauwatosa an
outstanding place to live and do business in the Milwaukee
metropolitan area. "Quality of life" is more than a goal;
it's a reality of Wauwatosa!
Funding from the City helps support the Wauwatosa Economic
Development Corporation, created to promote business retention
and development in the city. This partnership results in public-private
initiatives to enhance Wauwatosa's commercial and industrial
base. To help local businesses obtain the local approvals
needed to grow, the City has streamlined the permitting process,
and created a business resource center at the library to match
today's business needs.
The Wauwatosa
Public Library, housed in a user-friendly building
forming part of the City Hall Complex, has one of largest
collections in Milwaukee County. The library offers Internet
access and includes personal computers for public use, and
reference assistance in-person, over the phone, and through
email.
Our City boasts a full-service fire department providing fire
prevention, inspection and response, as well as EMS, hazardous
material response, confined space and other technical operations
from three fire stations. The Wauwatosa Police Department
is proud of the positive and productive relationship we have
established with our citizens, businesses, schools, and community
groups. Community support includes a Neighborhood Block Watch
Program, Crime Prevention Alert Program, Operation Identification,
Business Alert, Retail Theft and Fraud Presentation, Drug
Abuse Resistance and Safety Town Education, and Crime Stoppers.
Milwaukee
County government includes two county supervisors
from Wauwatosa. We also have two state representatives-one
in the assembly and one senator. In addition to their governmental
duties, these officials enthusiastically support the community
through their memberships and activities in various organizations.
